Interview with Jens Peder Jeppesen aquarium manager and marine biologist at the Øresund Aquarium
The Øresund Aquarium in Helsingør has over 40,000 visitors annually. They have about 35 screens: small screens, a large screen wall, a video wall and an info stand screen, all of which convey information about the fish in the museum’s aquariums and about various activities at the aquarium.
Interactive experiences are the way to satisfied guests
Museum visitors expect intense overall experiences, which is a challenge for many small museums. Before the Øresund Aquarium had information screens installed in their exhibition, visitors complained that they did not get enough for their money. According to Jens Peder, that experience has changed:
“The screens help to make the experience in the aquarium much more intense. The guests are activated, they feel that they are getting more for their money when they visit the aquarium, and are therefore more satisfied.”
Jens Peder says that he has become aware of how digitally oriented the guests are. Children, young people and grandparents find it completely natural to press the screens and get information about the animals in the aquariums. The touch screens invite guests to touch the screens and be illuminated. Jens Peder has always been proud of the aquarium. But he is overwhelmed by the new digital communication and is convinced that it has given the guests something extra:
“We did not expect how positive an effect it would have and how much better the visiting experience is for the guests.”
Simple communication with unimaginable possibilities
At the Øresund Aquarium, they change the fish several times a week. Digital signage has replaced the old-fashioned illuminated signs. It took a long time to change the information on the old signs – with the new info screens it only takes fifteen minutes, says Jens Peder.
“The screens from dnp Visiosign are a fantastic tool for communication. It has really been revolutionary for us in our daily work. At the same time as it is a fantastic relief for our editors, the screens have improved the audience’s perception of our exhibitions.”
Jens Peder says that they still have exhibitions where they have not yet had touch screens installed, and here they have registered that the guests do not get involved in the same way in reading what is written about the fish. Jens Peder has many ideas for how the communication can give visitors an even more unique experience, and how dnp Visiosign’s products can be used for improvements.
“There are truly unimaginable possibilities for what we can use the screens for. So it’s just a matter of opening them.”
Specifically, Jens Peder dreams of more large screens to show films and pictures, as well as room and meeting room screens in front of the museum’s meeting rooms. Jens Peder is sure that the digital communication helps to secure the future of the Øresund Aquarium.
Professional design, assembly and support characterize the collaboration with dnp Visiosign
Jens Peder particularly emphasizes the great effort and the good cooperation he has had with project managers, installers and support staff from dnp Visiosign in connection with the establishment and operation of their solutions.
“The collaboration with dnp Visiosign is really good, the design on our screens is a great success – it turned out much better than I had ever imagined.”
“dnp Visiosign support is very friendly and accommodating. When we call, the problem is solved very quickly.”
